Peter J. Gurfein is a partner in the Los Angeles office of Landau Gottfried & Berger LLP, where his practice focuses on representing creditors’ committees, trustees, debtors and equity-holders in major chapter 11 cases in the airline, health care, retail, telecommunication, entertainment, high-tech and real estate industries. He has appeared in cases involving bank insolvencies and insurance company insolvencies, and in chapter 11 cases involving high-net-worth individuals. A former prosecutor, Mr. Gurfein has extensive experience in the prosecution and defense of bankruptcy fraud investigations and officer and director liability. He is the current vice president of the Los Angeles Bankruptcy Forum and a past director of the California Bankruptcy Forum, and was editor-in-chief of the California Bankruptcy Journal (1995-99). Mr. Gurfein has lectured extensively on corporate-governance issues pertaining to the obligations of directors in the zone of insolvency, the sale of assets under distress, prepackaged plans of reorganization and bankruptcy in the hospitality industry. In April 2006, Mr. Gurfein was acknowledged by The Deal’s Bankruptcy Insider as one of the “top shareholder lawyers” for companies in reorganization, and he is also listed in “Who’s Who in America.” He received his B.A. from New York University and his J.D. from George Washington University.
